The explainable and the unexplained
Science and Mystery intertwined, for more read Frances Yates and Brian Vicker for Reciepts
I'm building a new theory of what exactly the occult does for the western psyche, why it co-evolved with the scientific tradition (and why scientism tried to kill it, but eventually it killed scientism with conspiracy factism/fanaticism)
I have to get it out before it disappears into the aether (another occult thingamajob)
You see all cultures have the occult, they just call it "whatever that shaman guy does, definitely don’t ask what it is but when you go sick go find him and he will suck the demon out of you and make you better"
But it doesn't undergo changes except over the 1000-year-long arc
Religions came in and institutionalized this, made it strong, they were able to demonstrate this power to the pagans and convert them to the more powerful magic (that is really what happens, particularly in Christianity, it was stronger magic, I have receipts, still done to this day in Africa)
Then something weird started happening in the 1500s, they started printing books, all of a sudden your local Germanic autist could start printing out all the corruption in the church
It got VIOLENT
And in the gap this ability to hide in the occult became strong, secret societies served as a meeting place for free minds who didn't want to set off the censors and the pedants, whether they were northern Protestants or southern Catholics, both of whom were more than willing to censor with swords
In this gap, the scientific method was created and it was done by the same people because guess what?
In order for science to work you need free inquiry and transparency (how else would others be able to recreate your work and thus build or destroy evidence?)
But the occult, the unseen mysterious realm of which all humans have to at least pay lip service to, remains mysterious (yes even to this day!)
So once we created the divorce and then filled it with science, the way we symbolized the unseen also had to evolve
That's why you get all these incredibly imaginative people in the 1800s creating all sorts of traditions (like Nietzsche, Jung, etc.)
The occult and science go hand in hand, a much more fancy show of which humans have been partaking since the dawn of historical time, it just happens much faster than it's ever happened before
Now that Scientism is dying an ugly death, watch out for the return of both science and occult symbolics for the transcendent mystery of which science tries to explain (but so far never can fully)
